El nombre “México” tiene su origen en las lenguas indígenas que se hablaban en el territorio antes de la llegada de los españoles. Se cree que proviene del náhuatl, la lengua del pueblo mexica, también conocidos como aztecas. En náhuatl, “Mēxihco” era el nombre de la capital del imperio mexica, ubicada donde hoy está la Ciudad de México.

The name “Mexico” originates from the indigenous languages spoken in the territory before the arrival of the Spanish. It is believed to come from Nahuatl, the language of the Mexica people, also known as the Aztecs. Una de las más aceptadas es que se refiere a “el lugar en el centro de la luna” o “el lugar en el ombligo de la luna”, ya que “metztli” significa luna, “xictli” significa ombligo o centro, y “co” indica lugar. Otra teoría sugiere que puede significar “el lugar donde vive Mexi”, en honor a un líder mítico de los mexicas.

There are several theories about the meaning of “Mēxihco”. One of the most accepted is that it refers to “the place in the center of the moon” or “the place in the navel of the moon”, since “metztli” means moon, “xictli” means navel or center, and “co” indicates place.
